UKMEAC (UK Microelectronics Environmental Advisory Committee) was established in 1992 after a DTI initiative aimed at providing a collaborative forum on this subject for the semiconductor industry. Membership is open to any organisation with an interest in the industry and its environmental issues and which will contribute to achieving its environmental goals.

Members are drawn from major semiconductor manufacturers operating in UK, their equipment & materials supply infrastructure and environmental consultancies. Representatives of regulatory authorities, both national and local have attended many meetings to discuss issues around regulation, especially IPC & IPPC.
All of the major semiconductor manufacturing companies are represented at least periodically.

This, Issue 3 of the Code of Practice is intended to give guidance on current best practices within the industry (effectively our implementation of BATNEEC, now BAT) and to assist in compliance with legal requirements. It was the hope of the authors that the code will help to facilitate the ongoing drive for environmental excellence.

Please notify UKMEAC's secretary, Derek Boyd, at the NMI (derek.boyd@nmi.org.uk) with any comments regarding the CoP, suggestions for improvement or any inaccuracies found.

Risk Assessment for Semiconductor Manufacture

The Microelectronic Semiconductor Manufacturing Joint Working Group consists of representatives from manufacturers of semiconductors, equipment and materials suppliers, Trade Unions and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The group was set up in 1985 with the general objective of providing a national forum for the discussion of health and safety issues affecting the industry and where appropriate, publishing guidance.

At one of its’ meetings a need for guidance on risk assessment, specific to the semiconductor industry, was identified. There was a desire amongst members of the Joint Working Group for an industry-wide approach to risk assessment that would provide relevant guidance relating to machinery, chemical, noise, radiation and general hazards. The objective was to make risk assessment more understandable and clarify the degrees of risk for those working on the process.
